With increasing understanding of how the human brain functions, psychologists tell us that, when it comes to education, “one size does not fit all.” Some people learn best by listening, others by reading, still others by doing. The tradition of the standard lecture with students taking notes, reading, memorizing, and then writing an exam still exists, but such activities as taping a lecture to replay at home, or using a laptop in class to take notes, or taking extra time for testing are strategies widely utilized nowadays.
There are many diagnoses of learning differences, any of which permit remedies in higher education. Certain universities and colleges are known to readily offer needed accommodations and support. There are a few that even specialize in welcoming students with particular learning differences.
