Why do students consider U.S. colleges?
Many are quite expensive, especially for Canadians worrying about the weak Canadian dollar.
But even looking beyond the most selective schools, here are some reasons students give:
- Small classes often in a college of fewer than 2,000 students, where eminent professors know them by name from day one, engage them in their learning, write recommendations and give support for grad and professional schools, and offer research opportunities for undergraduates.
- Some students are in love with such exciting places as Boston, New York, Washington and can’t wait to do internships in a vibrant setting.
- Others have seen the fun and school spirit at some of the big athletic schools and are eager to learn the fight song and join friends, paint their faces and go to a football game.
- Some know of a special program they want, such as entrepreneurship at Babson, or music at Juilliard, or art and design at Parsons, or robotics at Carnegie Mellon.
- Some Canadians just want to do something different from their friends, seize opportunities to make new friends, and find their way in a new environment.
Students who choose wisely and start the process early often find need-based financial aid or scholarships available to defray costs.
